"Introduction to Oncology Massage"

Delivered from a "Patient's Perspective" by massage therapists with personal experience of cancer, a number of Massage Schools in Scotland are now offering this one hour introduction.

The Session Objectives are:
  • To dispel some myths about cancer
  • To understand the benefits of massage from the Patients' perspective
  • To define Oncology Massage
  • To explore the issues of massage and cancer
  • To raise awareness of special massage techniques
  • To provide a short practical session
  • To communicate the goals for oncology massage in Scotland
  • To provide information on post graduate training
  • To provide contacts and networking information

  • April 16th, 2011 - final weekend of the Scottish Massage School's Swedish Massage Course at Edinburgh Academy Junior School
  • April 30th, 2011 - final weekend of the Western School of Massage's Swedish Massage Course at Glasgow Caledonian University
  • August 6th, 2011 - final weekend of the Grampian Massage School's Swedish Massage Course in Aberdeen
  • August 20th, 2011 - final weekend of the Scottish Massage School's Swedish Massage Course at Edinburgh Academy Junior School
  • September 24th, 2011 - final weekend of the Western School of Massage's Swedish Massage Course at Glasgow Caledonian University
  • December 10th, 2011 - final weekend of the Scottish Massage School's Swedish Massage Course at Edinburgh Academy Junior School
"Massage for People with Cancer"

The Foundation module from the Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage curriculum, delivered by Gayle MacDonald. Topics covered in the course include:
  • Opening the heart to those with serious illness
  • The basic physiology of cancer and metastasis
  • The benefits of massage for those affected by cancer
  • Adjustments necessary for those who have had / are having chemotherapy or radiotherapy, have had surgical or medical procedures, or are at risk of lymphoedema
  • Intake procedure for people with a history of cancer
  • Supervised session with a person living with cancer
Significant time is devoted to hands-on practice including giving a relaxing massage to someone who currently has, or who is recovering from, cancer.
